What money can buy in Gray Horizon
Looks, and a few extra saved slots. Never an advantage over someone who pays nothing. That is a rule in the game's code, and while the alpha lasts there is nothing on sale at all.
What money can never buy
The game keeps a list of things its store may never sell, in its code, next to the store itself. Every item the store offers has to declare that it is a look, a status or an extra saved slot. The game's tests refuse anything else, and the store checks again before every sale. This is the list:
- Credits, the game's money
- Energy, or a bigger Energy bar
- Extra shifts or training
- Damage in battle
- Gear with better stats
- Supply cases, or keys to open them
- Better odds inside a case
- Experience, or faster levels
- A factory that produces more
- Faster or stronger research
- Votes, or influence over them
- Powers in government
- A faster citizenship
- Tanks, aircraft, guns and other strategic assets
- A better deal at the market or on taxes
The game's design document puts the rule in two sentences:
Real money may buy expression, status cosmetics and genuine noncompetitive convenience. It may never buy competitive power.
What is planned for sale
Nothing is on sale yet. When the store opens, the plan is things that change how you look and a few that save you clicks. Prices and the list may still change before then.
How you look
- A brass or a signal frame around your picture
- An engraved nameplate
- A theme for your own profile page
- A broadsheet theme for your newspaper's pages
- A laurel for the emblem you design
- A matte finish on your rifle, with identical stats
- The Patron title, in the colour it was bought in, so nobody mistakes it for one the world gave you
Fewer clicks
- Three more showcase slots on your profile
- Two more saved loadouts
- Five more saved market filters
A slot holds the same things and does the same thing as the ones everybody has. There will also be a Supporter plan: a badge, 500 coins a month, those three, and a higher limit on the free public API, which changes how often you can ask it and never what it answers.
How coins will work
The store will sell for GH Coins, bought with money. Coins are kept apart from Credits, the money the world runs on, and they stay with the account that bought them. They can't be given to another citizen, sold for Credits, put in a bank, or spent on wages, taxes or donations.
Each of those would be a back door. A coin you could sell for Credits is money buying Credits by another route, and a coin a bank could hold is a coin somebody could borrow against.
Why nothing is for sale now
This is an alpha, and its world will be deleted when the alpha ends. Selling anything in it would mean charging people for something that is about to disappear, so the store stays shut until the alpha is over.
If you want to support the game anyway, there is a tip jar at ko-fi.com/nfila. In the game's own words, it buys nothing, unlocks nothing and changes nothing.
Questions
Is Gray Horizon pay to win?
No. Nothing in the store changes what you can do in the world. Every item has to be a look, a status or an extra saved slot. The game's tests refuse anything else, and the store checks again before every sale.
What will money buy?
Things that change how you look: frames, a nameplate, themes for your profile or your newspaper, a finish on your rifle with the same stats. There will also be a few extra saved slots, and a Supporter plan with a badge, monthly coins and a higher limit on the public API. None of it is on sale yet, and prices may change before it is.
Can coins be traded or sold for Credits?
No. Coins stay with the account that bought them. They can't be given to another citizen, sold for Credits, put in a bank, or spent on wages, taxes or donations.
Why is there nothing to buy right now?
Because this world will be deleted when the alpha ends. The store stays shut while the world is one that gets deleted, so nobody pays for something that is about to disappear.
